Metallic Silicon Powder, also known as Industrial Silicon Powder or Crystalline Silicon Powder, is a powdered form of silicon metal (metallurgical-grade silicon) produced through crushing, milling (and sometimes purification) processes.
Primary Composition: Predominantly elemental silicon (Si), typically ranging from about 98% to 99.99%+ purity. Major impurities include iron (Fe), aluminum (Al), and calcium (Ca).
Classification:Primarily categorized into Metallurgical Grade Silicon Powder (typically 98-99% Si, used in alloys and metallurgy) and Chemical Grade Silicon Powder (typically ≥99% Si, used for producing silicones, polysilicon, etc.).
Key Characteristics:
High Silicon Content: Its core value proposition.
Particle Size: Available in a wide range tailored to application needs, including coarse powder (e.g., -10 mesh, -100 mesh), fine powder (e.g., -200 mesh, -325 mesh), and ultrafine powder (micron or even nanometer scale).
Appearance:Typically grey to dark grey, varying with purity and particle size.
Chemical Properties:Stable at room temperature, but reacts with oxygen, halogens, and other elements at high temperatures. Insoluble in water and most acids, but soluble in hydrofluoric-nitric acid mixtures and strong alkalis.
Physical Properties: High melting point (~1414°C), high hardness, brittle, metallic luster (in lump form).
Primary Applications:
Aluminum Alloy Industry:As an additive to enhance strength and fluidity of aluminum alloys.
Silicone Chemical Industry:Chemical grade powder is the essential raw material for producing silanes, siloxanes, and ultimately silicone rubbers, silicone oils, silicone resins, and other silicone products.
Polysilicon/Monocrystalline Silicon Industry: High-purity powder serves as the starting material for producing polysilicon for solar photovoltaics and monocrystalline silicon for semiconductors (via Siemens or Fluidized Bed Reactor processes).
Refractories:Improves oxidation resistance and high-temperature strength of refractory bricks and castables.
Metallurgy & Foundry: Used as a deoxidizer or inoculant.
Electronics Industry: Used in the production of certain electronic ceramics and alloys.
