Boron carbide (B₄C) is an advanced ceramic material composed of boron and carbon, typically appearing gray-black and belonging to the class of ultra-high hardness materials. It has a Mohs hardness of approximately 9.3, second only to diamond and cubic boron nitride. In addition, it features a high melting point (around 2450 °C), excellent chemical inertness, low density, and outstanding neutron absorption capability.
Based on this combination of properties, boron carbide is widely used across several high-end fields:
1.Defense and Military Applications
Leveraging its high specific strength (strength-to-density ratio) and excellent impact resistance, boron carbide is extensively used in lightweight protective systems, including armored vehicles, ballistic plates, armor tiles, and personal body armor. Furthermore, due to its high neutron absorption cross-section for thermal neutrons, it is also utilized in the nuclear industry for manufacturing reactor control rods and neutron shielding materials.
2.Industrial and Engineering Applications
Owing to its exceptional wear resistance and stability, boron carbide is well-suited for components operating in highly abrasive environments, such as sandblasting nozzles, wear-resistant linings, and bearing elements. Its ultra-hard characteristics also make it an ideal material for grinding and polishing, particularly in the precision machining of hard materials such as cemented carbides and gemstones.
3.Other Application Areas
In high-temperature protection systems, boron carbide can be used as a functional additive to enhance oxidation resistance and high-temperature performance of materials. In the aerospace sector, it is applied in the production of high-temperature structural components and lightweight, high-strength parts.
