Silicon carbide (SiC) is produced from quartz sand, petroleum coke (or coal coke), and sawdust as primary raw materials, smelted at high temperature in a resistance furnace. In the production of green silicon carbide, an appropriate amount of salt is added as an auxiliary material. The product appears as black or green opaque crystals with a hexagonal crystal structure, exhibiting a Mohs hardness of 9.16–9.5—second only to diamond and boron carbide. It is brittle and sharp, with a certain degree of electrical conductivity.
Green Silicon Carbide (SiC), with an SiC content of approximately 99%, features excellent self-sharpening properties and is suitable for grinding cemented carbides and various hard and brittle materials. It is also applicable for processing non-ferrous metals such as copper, brass, aluminum, and magnesium, as well as non-metallic materials including gemstones, optical glass, and ceramics.
In addition, green silicon carbide is widely used in advanced refractory materials and the electronic semiconductor industry. In the abrasives field, it is commonly used for sandblasting, grinding, and polishing processes.
With the rapid development of the new energy sector, green silicon carbide has also been increasingly applied in the solar and photovoltaic industries, particularly in high-precision machining and the manufacturing of critical components, benefiting from its excellent thermal conductivity, high hardness, and strong chemical stability.
