(chemical formula: Cr₂O₃) is an inorganic green pigment synthesized by high-temperature reduction of chromates or reaction of potassium dichromate with sulfur. It exhibits a dark olive to forest green hue and demonstrates exceptional stability lightfastness 8heat resistance >1000°C). Non-toxic but contains heavy metal chromium.
Key Properties:
Chemical Inertness: Resistant to acids, alkalis, solvents, and corrosive gases
High Melting Point: ~2435°C (refractory grade)
High Hardness: Mohs 8-9 (usable as abrasive)
IR Reflectivity: Critical for military camouflage coatings
Primary Applications:
1. Coatings & Pigments:
Architectural paints (weather-resistant exteriors), automotive primers, ceramic glazes
Artist paints (oil, watercolor)
2. Industrial Materials:
Refractory bricks, foundry sands (steel metallurgy)
Polishing compounds (precision metals, optical glass)
Stealth coatings (infrared reflection)
3. Emerging Uses:
Catalyst supports (chemical synthesis)
Green cement coloration
